Zhangfei Temple (张飞庙), also known as the Temple of General Zhang Fei, is a historical site located in Yunyang County (formerly Yunyang City) in Sichuan Province.
It is dedicated to Zhang Fei, one of the most famous generals of the Three Kingdoms period (220-280 AD) in Chinese history, and a loyal warrior of Liu Bei, the founder of the Shu Han Kingdom.
As a prominent figure in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Zhang Fei’s legacy is deeply embedded in Chinese history and folklore. The temple serves as a memorial to his life, bravery, and loyalty to the Shu Han Kingdom.
History of Zhangfei Temple
Zhang Fei was one of the legendary “Five Tiger Generals” of the Shu Han Kingdom during the Three Kingdoms period, famous for his bravery and loyalty. He played a crucial role in the establishment of the Shu Han state.
The temple was originally built during the Song Dynasty (960–1279 AD) to honor Zhang Fei’s contributions and memory. Over the centuries, it has undergone several reconstructions due to natural disasters and the changing course of the Yangtze River.
Zhangfei Temple – location and relocation
Zhangfei Temple was originally situated in Yunyang, which was later submerged due to the construction of the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River. In the early 2000s, the temple was carefully relocated to a higher spot to preserve it from flooding caused by the dam.
The temple now overlooks the Yangtze River, offering visitors picturesque views of the river and surrounding areas.

Zhanfei Temple located in Yunyang county, so fist need to take a train from Chongqing north railway station to Yunyang. It takes around 1,5 hours.
From Yunyang to Zhangfei Temple can take a tourist bus named “Fuxing Park Tourist Route” (福星公园旅游线), it will take around 40 minutes.
