Mutianyu Great Wall travel guide

Mutianyu Great Wall

The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall is one of the most scenic and family-friendly parts of the wall, located about 70 kilometers (43 miles) northeast of Beijing.

This section is famous for its well-preserved structure, fewer crowds compared to Badaling, and lush natural surroundings, making it a popular choice for visitors who want a quieter, more authentic Great Wall experience.

History of the Mutianyu

How to go to Mutianyu China

Mutianyu was restored in the 1980s and offers a well-maintained path, making it easier to explore. However, it sees fewer visitors than the Badaling section, which means you can enjoy a more relaxed and serene visit, even during peak tourist seasons.

Mutianyu served as a northern barrier to defend the capital, Beijing, and the imperial tombs during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644). The section is equipped with 23 watchtowers and was a critical military fortification.

Why to choose Mutianyu

visiting Mutianyu China

This section of the Wall is surrounded by dense forests and rolling hills, with trees covering over 90% of the area. Mutianyu is especially beautiful in the fall, when the leaves turn vibrant shades of red and orange, and in spring, when the area is filled with blossoms. The views are more scenic and less developed compared to Badaling.

  • Mutianyu is known for its family-friendly features, such as a cable car that makes it easy to reach the Wall, a chairlift, and a fun toboggan ride that takes you down the hillside—a favorite for kids and adventurous adults.

This section of the Great Wall features unique architectural details, such as double parapets (walls on both sides of the Wall for better defense) and multiple watchtowers that are closely spaced together, making it one of the most defensive sections of the entire Wall.

What to Expect During Your Visit

The Mutianyu section has three main entrances: Watchtower 6, Watchtower 10, and Watchtower 14. The most popular way to visit is to take the cable car up to Watchtower 14, hike along the Wall, and then either walk down or take the toboggan for a fun descent.

The hike from Watchtower 14 to Watchtower 20 is one of the most scenic and challenging sections, with steep inclines and breathtaking views of the surrounding hills. However, it’s well worth the effort for the panoramic vistas.

Bring comfortable shoes as the Wall has steep steps and uneven terrain in some areas.

Pack water, sunscreen, and a hat as there is limited shade, especially during the summer.
