Xiaohongshu, also known as Little Red Book or RED (more common name is RedNote), is a widely popular Chinese mobile app that blends social networking, photo and video sharing, and e-commerce functionalities.
Launched in 2013, the platform was initially designed for users to share their experiences of purchasing goods abroad. Over time, however, it has evolved into a multifaceted ecosystem, rapidly expanding within China’s internet landscape.
The rise of Red Note
Xiaohongshu debuted in the Chinese market in 2013 as a platform for users to discuss and review their international shopping experiences. The founders aimed to attract content creators from around the world to share insights on high-quality foreign products.
Within a year, the app had amassed tens of millions of active users, highlighting its strong appeal among the Chinese audience.

In December 2014, the platform integrated cross-border e-commerce features, enabling users to purchase skincare products, cosmetics, bags, clothing, accessories, home décor, and other imported goods. To support this expansion, Red Note app established its own warehouses in Shenzhen and Zhengzhou.
By 2016, the platform held a modest 6.5% share of China’s e-commerce market—far behind major competitors like Taobao and Tmall. However, in 2017, it launched its own logistics service, setting the stage for further growth.
Red Note received significant financial backing in 2016 and 2018, securing $400 million in funding from Chinese tech giants Tencent and Alibaba. This investment fueled the app’s transformation into a unique social commerce platform with a sleek, stylish interface, catering to China’s trend-conscious consumers. In 2019, Red Note introduced a live-streaming feature, which has since become a key driver of e-commerce in China.

The platform’s user base has grown exponentially. In June 2018, monthly active users surpassed 50 million. By July 2020, this number had exceeded 100 million, and by 2023, it had soared to 350 million.
In 2025, Ren Note attracted many new foreign creators after the news of TikTok’s ban in the USA emerged. This led to the hashtag “TikTok refugee” becoming one of the most used on the app. Today, Ren Note is one of the most popular social media platforms in the world.
Red Note’s Target Audience and Influence
Over 70% of Red Note’s users are young women born after 1990. This demographic prioritizes quality and lifestyle, invests heavily in personal care and wellness, and possesses strong purchasing power.
For Western users, Red Note resembles a blend of Pinterest and Instagram—both of which are blocked in China.

Like those platforms, content quality directly influences user engagement: the more visually appealing the content, the higher the number of followers, and the greater the potential to become an influencer. Users can monetize their presence by selling products in industries such as beauty, fashion, health, fitness, travel, and entertainment.
In August 2024, the Chinese research institute Hurun ranked Xiaohongshu 101st in its list of “China’s 500 Largest Companies in 2023,” valuing the company at approximately $100 billion.
The Future of Red Note
Experts predict that by 2025, Red Note could rival Baidu, China’s leading search engine, in terms of search query volume. In the fourth quarter of 2024, daily search queries on Red Note reached 600 million.

For comparison, China’s top search engines—including Baidu—collectively handle just over 1 billion daily searches, meaning Red Note already accounts for nearly half of that figure. At its current rate of growth, Red Note has the potential to become China’s largest search engine in the near future.
Key Features of the Red Note Platform
User-Generated Content (UGC)
Red Note allows users to create and share short posts, photos, and videos about various trending products. Through their blogs, users express opinions, offer advice, and provide recommendations, fostering an active and engaged community. The platform includes familiar interaction features such as likes, comments, and reposts.
E-Commerce Integration
Beyond being a content-sharing platform, Red Note also functions as a marketplace. Users can easily discover and purchase products recommended by other users or even well-known influencers.
Brand Collaborations
Brands leverage Red Note as a powerful marketing tool to promote their products and services. Many collaborate with influencers to create engaging content that enhances brand image and boosts sales.
Personalized Algorithms
Red Note employs advanced algorithms that curate content based on user interests and interactions. This personalization gives users the impression that the platform intuitively delivers content tailored to their needs and preferences.
Visual-Centric Experience
The platform places a strong emphasis on aesthetics, prioritizing visually appealing content to enhance user engagement. While this approach creates an inspiring atmosphere, it has also drawn criticism for promoting unrealistic portrayals.
In 2021, Red Note faced a scandal after users accused influencers of excessively embellishing their posts, leading to a decline in trust among some of its audience.
The Influence of Red Note on Consumer Behavior
In recent years, Red Note has played a significant role in shaping modern Chinese consumer habits. It has become the go-to platform for users seeking product reviews, travel recommendations, and lifestyle inspiration before making a purchase decision.
By seamlessly blending visual content with e-commerce, Red Note has cultivated a new consumer culture among Chinese youth. Similar to Douyin, it influences not only purchasing choices but also broader trends in fashion, cosmetics, and lifestyle—especially among young Chinese women, who form the platform’s primary user base.
