Jiaxiu Tower (甲秀楼) is one of Guiyang’s most iconic landmarks.
Standing gracefully above the Nanming River in the heart of the city, this ancient tower is not only an architectural treasure but also a powerful cultural symbol of scholarship, elegance, and resilience in Guizhou’s capital.

What is Jiaxiu Tower?
Built in 1598 during the Ming Dynasty, Jiaxiu Tower was originally constructed as a place for scholars to study and prepare for the imperial civil service examinations. The name “Jiaxiu” (甲秀) can be translated as “First Scholar’s Tower” — a hopeful wish that Guizhou would produce top-ranked scholars in the national exams.
The tower has since become a symbol of intellectual achievement and cultural pride in Guiyang.

Architecture of Jiaxiu Tower
- The tower is a striking three-story wooden pavilion, built atop a large stone base in the middle of the river.
- It rises about 20 meters high, with sweeping eaves, intricate carvings, and upturned roof corners in classic Ming style.
- Connected to the riverbanks by the beautiful Fuyu Bridge (浮玉桥), a white stone arched bridge lined with traditional railings, the whole scene resembles a painting.
- Inside, visitors will find poetry inscriptions, calligraphy works, and cultural relics, many donated by local scholars over the centuries.

The tower has been destroyed and rebuilt several times due to floods and war, but it retains its original Ming-style charm.
