- Location: Yuanyang County, Honghe Hani & Yi Autonomous Prefecture, southern Yunnan
- Altitude: ~1,000–2,000 m
- UNESCO World Heritage Site (since 2013)
- History: Created by the Hani people over 1,300 years, carved by hand into the Ailao Mountains

The terraces cascade down steep mountainsides like giant stairways, changing color with the seasons — mirrors of water, fields of green, or golden harvest waves.
What makes Yuanyang unique is the perfect triangle of nature + people + time:
- Mountains collect mist and rain
- Forests channel water
- Villages manage irrigation
- Terraces reflect the sky
It’s not just scenery — it’s a living agricultural system still used today.

How to get to Yuanyang Rice Terraces from other cities

Yuanyang is quite far from Shangri-La and Lijiang, so planning the route properly really matters. Yuanyang is in southern Yunnan, while Lijiang & Shangri-La are in the north-west. There is no direct transport, and the trip is long.
Best & Most Practical Route

Lijiang / Shangri-La → Kunming → Yuanyang
This is the recommended route for most travelers. From north to south. You can choose different ways – private car, pubkic bus, trains or travel by air.
If you’re already in Lijiang or Shangri-La, Yuanyang is worth it only if you have at least 3 extra days. Otherwise, focus on closer highlights (Tiger Leaping Gorge, Meili Snow Mountain).
