History of Chen Clan Ancestral Hall

Built for Education & Family Worship (1894, Qing Dynasty)
The hall was built by the Chen family, one of the largest and most influential clans in Guangdong. It was funded by 72 Chen family branches from different villages across Guangdong and overseas.
Originally, it served as:
– A study hall for young Chen family members preparing for the imperial exams.
– An ancestral temple for honoring the Chen family’s ancestors.

Decline & Transformation (Early 20th Century – 1950s)
After the fall of the Qing Dynasty (1911), the imperial exam system ended, and the hall lost its original purpose. It was used as a school, factory, and office during the early 20th century.
The site suffered damage during wars, but its structure remained intact.

Restoration & Rebirth as a Museum (1959 – Present)
In 1959, it was turned into the Guangdong Folk Art Museum (广东民间工艺博物馆). It has been carefully restored and is now one of Guangzhou’s best-preserved Qing Dynasty buildings.
Recognized as a National Cultural Heritage Site, it attracts visitors interested in Chinese architecture and traditional arts.
