History of Lianhua Mountain
Formation – why Lianhua Mountains have this shape?

Lianhua Mountain’s unique shape—with steep cliffs, jagged rock formations, and deep pits—is the result of both natural geological processes and ancient human quarrying.
- Over 200 million years ago, the area was covered by the sea, and sedimentary rocks slowly formed.
- The mountain was originally a huge sandstone formation, made of red and yellow sandstone.
- Erosion by wind and water over millions of years created natural caves, cliffs, and valleys.
- The current landscape is mainly the result of human quarrying, which started over 2,000 years ago.
Ancient Quarrying (Han Dynasty, 206 BC – 220 AD)

Lianhua Mountain was one of the most important stone quarries in southern China. The red sandstone from this area was widely used for building temples, tombstones, and city walls.
Many historic buildings in Guangzhou, such as Baiyun Temple and ancient city walls, used stone from Lianhua Mountain. After centuries of mining, deep cuts, pits, and cliffs were left in the mountain, giving it its current rugged shape.
Development as a Cultural & Religious Site (Ming & Qing Dynasties, 1368–1912)

After quarrying slowed down, monks and scholars turned Lianhua Mountain into a spiritual retreat. Lianhua Temple (莲花寺) was built, making the mountain a sacred Buddhist site.
Lotus flowers started growing naturally in the area, giving the mountain its name “Lotus Mountain”. Legends say the mountain resembles a lotus flower blooming from the Pearl River.
Modern Era (1980s–Today)

In 1984, Lianhua Mountain was officially turned into a scenic park. The 40-meter-tall golden Guanyin statue was added, becoming one of the largest in China.
Today, it is a popular tourist attraction known for its Buddhist culture, history, and natural beauty.
