History of Sacred Heart Cathedral

Commissioned by French Missionaries (1863–1888)

In 1863, the cathedral was commissioned by French Catholic missionaries under the order of Napoleon III. It was built on the former residence of the Viceroy of Guangdong and Guangxi, who governed the region.

25 years of construction

Construction took 25 years (1863–1888) due to its massive size and complex design.

French architects designed it, but it was built using local Chinese craftsmen and imported materials. The cathedral is one of the only Gothic churches in the world made entirely of granite, including its pillars, walls, and twin towers.

Surviving the revolution

During the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976), the church was temporarily closed but was spared from major destruction.

It was reopened for religious services in 1980 and remains one of Guangzhou’s most important Catholic churches.
