History of the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees

Founded in the 6th Century (AD 537)
The temple was originally built during the Southern Liang Dynasty (AD 502–557) under the name Baozhuangyan Temple (宝庄严寺). It was constructed to house Buddhist relics brought from India.
Named by the Famous Poet Su Shi (11th Century)
In the Song Dynasty (AD 960–1279), the famous poet Su Shi (苏轼, also known as Su Dongpo) visited the temple. He noticed six ancient banyan trees growing in the courtyard and wrote the inscription “Six Banyans” (六榕).

Since then, the temple has been called the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees.
Surviving wars and restorations
Over the centuries, the temple suffered damage from wars and fires but was rebuilt and restored many times. The current version of the Flower Pagoda was rebuilt in 1097, but its design has been influenced by later restorations.
Why you must visit the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees?
The Flower Pagoda (花塔) – The Tallest Ancient Pagoda in Guangzhou

The 57.6-meter (189-foot) tall pagoda is the temple’s most famous landmark. It is named “Flower Pagoda” because its layers resemble flower petals.
Though it appears nine stories high from the outside, it actually has 17 floors inside! Visitors can climb inside the pagoda (but not all the way to the top).
Impressive Buddhist Statues & Art

Inside the temple, there are three large bronze Buddha statues, each over 6 meters tall. These statues represent the Three Ages of Buddhism (Past, Present, and Future).
The temple also contains beautiful wood carvings and ancient calligraphy.
Peaceful Atmosphere & Spiritual Experience

As an active Buddhist temple, many monks and worshippers visit daily. Visitors can burn incense, meditate, or observe Buddhist rituals.
The temple is a great place for relaxation and reflection in the middle of the city.
