Shanhaiguan (山海关) — one of the most historically significant and scenic sections of the Great Wall of China, known as the “First Pass Under Heaven” (天下第一关).

What is Shanhaiguan?

Shanhaiguan is a strategic pass of the Great Wall of China, located in Qinhuangdao City, Hebei Province, where the Wall descends from the mountains and touches the Bohai Sea. It marks the eastern end of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall and was a key military defense point for centuries.
Its poetic title, “First Pass Under Heaven”, was earned because of its prime location and grandeur — it was considered the first and most important gate of the Great Wall heading westward from the sea.
