History of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall

Sun Yat-sen & the 1911 Revolution (Early 20th Century)

Dr. Sun Yat-sen was the first president of the Republic of China and played a key role in overthrowing the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912). He led the Revolution of 1911, which ended China’s imperial rule and brought in a new government.

Though he died in 1925, his vision for a modern China continued to inspire the nation.

Construction of the Memorial Hall (1929–1931)

After Dr. Sun’s death, the people of Guangzhou wanted to honor his legacy.

Construction began in 1929, led by the famous Chinese architect Lu Yanzhi (吕彦直), who also designed the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum in Nanjing. Completed in 1931, the building was designed in a traditional Chinese palace style but used modern engineering techniques.

Damage & Restoration (1940s–Present)

The hall suffered bombing damage during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945). It was repaired multiple times, with major restorations in 1956 and 1998, keeping its original design intact.
